What is it?
Exercises
Exercises and/or dances in Biodanza are a vehicle we use to practise embodiment of various aspects of human being. There are hundreds of exercises being used within a system. All carefully designed and highly specific in their effect and purpose. Although we dance those exercises in the session, there are no steps or routine movements involved. Nor is it possible to do it “the right” or “the wrong” way. It is not about how we look as we move that is important in Biodanza. We are not there to impress other people in the session, or to prove to the world that we can move in a beautiful way…We are there to practise being a human and to learn new ways of expression.
It is all about how we feel as we move.
It’s about connecting with our bodies and emotions and allowing the music to move us from the inside out.
It’s about learning to let go of our heads and rational minds, and to sink into our bodies.
We all have different body shapes, different sizes and ages and we vary in our ability to move. Biodanza is about working with what is. We endeavour to express what we can and how we can. And in that, there is no judgement of anyone. Instead, there is celebration of our differences. There is recognition and acceptance of our diversity as species of humans.
Although the exercises themselves are potent and powerful in their own right, they don’t have isolated value in a sense of “list of dances”. Instead, when we use them in Biodanza session, we put them in a specific order. In a progressive order, so that we are gradually led along the path of Vivencia, spiralling deeper and deeper, opening more and more. The exercises are organised in order to generate a process of change. For that reason it’s important to continue practising Biodanza until its effects are stabilized and embodied in our daily lives.
