What is it?
The language of the body and a social mask
During a session of Biodanza the only voice you will hear will be that of your teacher. While engaged in Vivencia we use only our body to communicate with others. We do not use words and verbal language. Instead, we use the words of the body. We communicate our desires, our wishes, our limits and our boundaries through the moves of our body. We do that for few reasons.
One is to change a paradigm we normally live in. By using only our body to communicate, it helps us to leave our every day rational head behind, and to enter into the world of sensual and body awareness for the purpose of deepening our practise of Biodanza.
Second reason is to practise and learn the language of the body in its full richness. It is an amazing and awesomely powerful way to communicate. In fact, when we speak the language of the body, the words become support tool in communication, rather than the only means of getting our point across to others. There is a whole vast range of signals, gestures, smells and moves our body uses, that are by far superior in getting our communication across than the actual words. In other words, we can express whole sentences in one gesture, which would take many many words to express through verbal communication.
For us to begin using this language, we only need to recover it from our body memory. As children we ones spoke in this way. We knew the secrets of direct and upfront body communication. Reason we forgot it as adults is this.
As we grow from our original state of full openness as children, we gradually accept our society’s rules and codes of conduct in order to be accepted by our families, friends and our society at large. Those rules are mostly based in fear. In fear of being seen for who we really are, and what is it that we are saying. We start hiding our natural expression behind a social mask we create in order to fit in and be “successful” in life. Those social masks we adopted on our way to adulthood we created not even knowing that we even created them in the first place, and how damaging and limiting they will be for our future life and expression.
We created them to mimic everyone else around us that seem to have the same masking device built in into their being. We copied our parents and our families and created them thinking that it’s the only way to succeed in this life. After all, if our parents are doing it, it must be the right thing to do. Little did we know that even our parents and our families didn’t know the truth. They also copied their parents and families in creating their own social masks.
Somehow through our history as humans on earth, we accepted the lie that to succeed in life we need to hide ourselves and never allow the true expression to be revealed to others.
Unfortunately for most of us, this meant giving up our innate knowledge of richness that comes with direct and open contact with others. This education in domestication crippled our ability to act like animals do. To respond to life from a place of body/emotion awareness and to use our body to navigate through the sea of subtle signals we constantly receive from others.
Through practise of Biodanza we recover and reconnect with our ability to use our body as a highly
effective and eloquent communication tool.
